Riad

Riad ist die Hauptstadt Saudi-Arabiens und dessen politisches und finanzielles Zentrum, eine schnell wachsende Metropole im Zentrum der Arabischen Halbinsel.

Übersicht

Riad (arabisch: الرياض, „die Gärten“) ist die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt Saudi-Arabiens. Es ist der Sitz der Zentralregierung und das wichtigste Handels- und Finanzzentrum des Landes.

Geographie

Riad liegt im Zentrum der Arabischen Halbinsel auf dem Najd-Plateau auf einer Höhe von etwa 600 Metern. Die Stadt liegt in einem breiten Wadi und ist von Wüste umgeben.

Geschichte

Riad war eine kleine Oasensiedlung, bis es 1902 von Ibn Saud eingenommen wurde, ein Ereignis, das den Beginn der Vereinigung des Königreichs markierte. Sie wurde 1932 zur Hauptstadt des neu vereinten Saudi-Arabiens erklärt und hat sich von einer Stadt mit einigen Zehntausend Einwohnern zu einer Metropole mit mehreren Millionen Einwohnern entwickelt.

Wirtschaft und Sehenswürdigkeiten

Riad ist der Sitz der Zentralregierung, des öffentlichen Investitionsfonds und die größte Ansammlung von Unternehmenszentralen im Königreich. Es enthält die Masmak-Festung, das historische Diriyah-Viertel, das Kingdom Centre und das Nationalmuseum von Saudi-Arabien.
