Mekka

Mekka ist die heiligste Stadt des Islam, Heimat der Kaaba und der Großen Moschee und Ziel der jährlichen Hadsch-Wallfahrt.

Übersicht

Mekka (arabisch: مكة المكرمة), auch Mekka geschrieben, ist die heiligste Stadt des Islam. Es ist der Geburtsort des Propheten Mohammed und Standort der Masjid al-Haram (der Großen Moschee), in der sich die Kaaba befindet, die Gebetsrichtung für Muslime weltweit.

Bedeutung

Jeder körperlich leistungsfähige Muslim ist verpflichtet, mindestens einmal in seinem Leben die Hadsch-Pilgerreise nach Mekka zu unternehmen. Die Stadt empfängt jedes Jahr Millionen von Pilgern zum Hadsch und zur Umrah. Der Zutritt zum Stadtzentrum ist Muslimen vorbehalten.

Geographie

Mekka liegt landeinwärts im Sirat-Gebirge des Hedschas, etwa 70 Kilometer von der Küste des Roten Meeres entfernt, in einem engen Tal auf einer Höhe von etwa 277 Metern.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Die Masjid al-Haram ist die größte Moschee der Welt und umgibt die Kaaba. In der Stadt befinden sich auch der Zamzam-Brunnen und die historischen Stätten der Hadsch-Rituale in Mina, Muzdalifah und Arafat.
