Médine est la deuxième ville sainte de l'Islam, la ville de migration du Prophète et le site d'Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

Médine (arabe : المدينة المنورة, « la ville illuminée ») est la deuxième ville la plus sainte de l'Islam. C'est le lieu de sépulture du prophète Mahomet et le site d'Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (la mosquée du Prophète).

Historique

Médine, alors connue sous le nom de Yathrib, était la destination de la migration du prophète Mahomet (Hijra) depuis La Mecque en 622 de notre ère, l'événement qui marque le début du calendrier islamique. Elle est devenue la capitale du premier État musulman.

Points de repère

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi est l'une des plus grandes mosquées du monde et abrite le tombeau du Prophète. La ville contient également la mosquée Quba, la première mosquée de l'Islam, et la mosquée Qiblatain.
