Renewable energy in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is developing large-scale solar and wind projects and aims to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen.
Overview
Saudi Arabia is developing renewable energy at scale as part of its strategy to diversify the energy mix and to maintain its position as a global energy exporter in a decarbonising world.
Solar
The Kingdom has some of the highest solar irradiation levels in the world. Major projects include the Sudair solar plant and the Sakaka photovoltaic plant, with further capacity under development.
Wind
The Dumat al-Jandal wind farm was the Kingdom's first utility-scale wind project, and further wind capacity is planned in the north and west.
Targets
The National Renewable Energy Program aims for renewables to supply a substantial share of electricity generation, with a target of around 50 per cent by 2030.
Hydrogen
Saudi Arabia is developing green hydrogen production, including a major project at NEOM, and aims to become a leading exporter of hydrogen and ammonia.
