Overview
Madinah (Arabic: المدينة المنورة, "the illuminated city") is the second holiest city of Islam. It is the burial place of the Prophet Muhammad and the site of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque).
History
Madinah, then known as Yathrib, was the destination of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Makkah in 622 CE, the event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. It became the capital of the early Muslim state.
Landmarks
Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is one of the largest mosques in the world and contains the tomb of the Prophet. The city also contains the Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam, and the Qiblatain Mosque.
