Inscription of Hegra as a World Heritage Site
In 2008 Hegra became the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Overview
In July 2008 Hegra (Mada'in Salih) became the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, at the 32nd session of the World Heritage Committee.
Significance
The inscription recognised the outstanding universal value of the Nabataean rock-cut tombs and brought international attention to the archaeological heritage of north-western Arabia. It was followed by the inscription of Diriyah, historic Jeddah, the rock art of Hail, the Al-Ahsa Oasis and further properties.
Consequences
The inscription supported the development of Al-Ula as a cultural tourism destination and encouraged further archaeological research in the region.
