Overview
On 23 September 1932 the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was formally proclaimed, unifying the regions of the Arabian Peninsula under King Abdulaziz ibn Saud. The date is celebrated annually as Saudi National Day.
Background
After three decades of campaigns, Ibn Saud had brought the Najd, Al-Ahsa, the Hejaz and the northern regions under his rule. A royal decree renamed the realm the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Significance
The proclamation created the modern Saudi state and is the central event in the country's national history.
