Masmak Fortress is a mud-brick fortress in central Riyadh, famous as the site of the recapture of Riyadh in 1902.
Overview
Masmak Fortress is a mud-brick fortress in the centre of Riyadh, built in the traditional Najdi style. It is famous as the site of the recapture of Riyadh by Abdulaziz ibn Saud in 1902.
Architecture
The fortress has thick walls, corner towers and a single gate, and is built of mud brick with wooden and stone detailing. It is a well-preserved example of Najdi military architecture.
Historical significance
In January 1902 Ibn Saud and a small force entered the fortress and took Riyadh from the Rashidi garrison, an event that began the campaigns leading to the unification of the Kingdom.
Museum
The fortress has been restored and converted into a museum, with displays on the history of the Kingdom and on the life of Ibn Saud, and it is a major heritage site in the capital.
