The Masmak Fortress (Arabic: قصر المصمك) is a clay and mud-brick fort in the centre of Riyadh. It is one of the city's most important historic monuments.
History
The fort was built around 1865 and was the site of the Battle of Riyadh in 1902, when Ibn Saud and a small force recaptured the city from the Rashidi garrison, an event that began the unification of Saudi Arabia.
Museum
The fortress has been restored and now houses a museum documenting the unification of the Kingdom, with displays of weapons, costumes and historical photographs.
