Saudi society is a young, urbanising society with a population of about 32 million, of whom a substantial minority are expatriate workers. It places a strong emphasis on family, religion and hospitality.
Demography
The population is young, with a majority under the age of 35, and highly urbanised, with most people living in the major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province.
Family and religion
Family is the central social institution, and extended family ties remain strong. Islam shapes public life, and the values of hospitality, generosity and respect for elders are widely held.
Social change
Under Vision 2030 the Kingdom has seen rapid social change, including the expansion of women's participation in the workforce, the lifting of the ban on women driving in 2018, and the growth of entertainment and cultural sectors.
