International Relations

Saudi Arabia–Bahrain relations

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain maintain close relations, connected physically by the King Fahd Causeway and bound by GCC membership and economic integration.

Overview

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain maintain close relations as Gulf neighbours, connected physically by the King Fahd Causeway and bound by shared membership of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The King Fahd Causeway

Opened in 1986, the causeway links Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia with Manama in Bahrain across about 25 kilometres of the Gulf. It is one of the busiest border crossings in the region and a central element of the relationship.

Economic relations

Bahrain is a popular destination for Saudi visitors, and the two economies are closely integrated. Saudi Arabia is a major investor in Bahrain, and the two countries cooperate on energy and industry.

Security

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain coordinate closely on Gulf security, and Saudi forces have participated in the defence of Bahrain.

Transport

Beyond the causeway, flights connect Bahrain with Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
