The Asir Mountains
The Asir Mountains form the highest and wettest part of Saudi Arabia, with terraced agriculture, juniper forests and a cool climate.
Overview
The Asir Mountains are a highland region in south-western Saudi Arabia, forming part of the Sarawat range that runs parallel to the Red Sea coast. The region is centred on the city of Abha.
Geography
The mountains rise steeply from the coastal plain, known as the Tihama, to peaks of over 3,000 metres. Jabal Sawda, near Abha, is the highest point in Saudi Arabia. The highlands receive the highest rainfall in the Kingdom.
Culture and agriculture
The Asir region is known for its terraced agriculture, its distinctive stone and mud architecture, and its traditional culture. The cool climate makes it a popular summer destination for visitors from the hotter coastal cities.
