Saudi Arabia and Japan maintain a long-standing partnership founded on oil supply, with cooperation on industry, technology and investment. The relationship dates from the 1950s.

Energy

Japan is a major buyer of Saudi crude oil, and the two countries have maintained a stable energy relationship for decades, including strategic oil storage arrangements in Japan.

Economic relations

Japanese firms are active in Saudi industry, petrochemicals, vehicles and infrastructure, and joint ventures have been established in refining and chemicals. Cooperation on technology and manufacturing has expanded.

Culture and education

Cultural exchange has grown, and Saudi students study at Japanese universities. Japan has supported heritage and cultural projects in the Kingdom.

Diplomacy

Both countries are members of the G20 and coordinate on energy and international economic questions.
